The word Ocoxal comes from the Nahuatl "ocotl," which means ocote (a kind of pine tree), and "xalli," which means sand.
Ocoxal are leaves or needles shed from the pines; these leaves are collected after browning and falling off. People harvest these leaves from the end of November until March. The artisanal process starts when the leaves are soaked with water and dried under the sun. The dried leaves are then used to create stunning crafts.
